Mind-Body Wellness for Underserved PopulationsThe Peace by Peace Project
It is our core belief that healing and wellness should not just be a privilege available to the few, but a birthright that must be restored to all individuals, no matter their background or circumstance. Through the Peace by Peace Project, Karma Krew provides yoga-based empowerment programs to underserved populations throughout society. These programs utilize physical postures, breathing, relaxation, meditation, and other mind-body wellness techniques to instill confidence, cultivate calm, and build self esteem in each individual that passes through the program. The Peace by Peace Project aims to make these practices available on a national basis within environments which would otherwise not have access to yoga such as domestic violence shelters, nursing homes, prisons, alcohol and drug treatment centers, homes for abused and neglected children, and other places that serve the most marginalized sections of our population.
Current Peace by Peace Project Updates
Karma Krew is now pilot testing a Peace by Peace curriculum specifically for abused and neglected children living in emergency shelters, group homes, and transitional living environments. The pilot phase is taking place in eight shelters over a four county radius in South East Florida before expanding nationally. Partnering children's agencies include Children's Home Society (two runaway shelters and two girl's group homes), Hibiscus Children's Center (one co-ed group village and one emergency shelter), Place of Hope (teenage girls program and toddler boys program), and Turtle Nest Village (transitional living for young adults who have aged out of foster care).
Offering children a place of stability, safety, and community during a critical time in their personal growth development, shelters can (and often do) represent a place where healing for these children can begin. With therapeutic programming and individualized attention, the Peace by Peace Project seeks to complement and enhance the supportive environment that already exists at children's shelters by providing quality enrichment yoga programming that can positively affect both the children and the shelter's staff, and fortify the entire learning/living environment in these facilities.
